Donations to the Foreign Languages and Cultures scholarship funds are an essential part of our resources in a time of shrinking state support for public higher education. Your generosity, however large or small, is deeply appreciated and helps us to attract and support the brightest students to our program while providing the most impactful learning experiences.

Scholarship Funds

The department awards funds from the following established scholarships:

Frank and Winifred Cobb Foreign Language Scholarship
For full-time undergraduate students of junior or senior standing majoring in the field of foreign languages. Scholarships will be awarded on the basis of financial need and academic achievement.

Oscar and Muriel Holloway Ferrians Scholarship
For students who are studying foreign languages who are deserving and have financial need.

Chris Haaf Travel FundFor undergraduate or graduate student travel to Germany or Austria to acquire greater proficiency in the German language and a direct exposure to the culture of the region.

Christopher “CJ” and Nannea “Nan” Johnson Scholarship
For junior and senior standing students pursuing a foreign languages degree with a GPA in foreign language courses of 3.5 or higher and an overall GPA of 3.3 or higher, with a first preference for students studying French.

Robert B. and Adele B. Knox Scholarship
For undergraduate and graduate students in foreign languages with a minimum 3.5 GPA.

Arne Lindberg Scholarship
For undergraduate and graduate students in foreign languages.

Elizabeth G. Lord Scholarship
For foreign language students with financial need who are scholastically competent in German to attain excellence in the language, particularly in study abroad programs.

Schlect German Summer Study Abroad ScholarshipFor students participating in the Department of Foreign Languages and Cultures German Summer Study Abroad Program

Albert W. Thompson Education Abroad Scholarship
For undergraduate Study Abroad students (*Foreign Languages major/minor not required). The scholarship awarded by nomination of advisor or department chair. Apply through IP Study Abroad Office, approved by the Department of Foreign Languages and Cultures, and paid through the College of Arts and Sciences.

Kenneth H. Vanderford Scholarship
For full-time regularly enrolled students majoring in foreign languages with excellent character and with potential for growth in their profession.

Show Your Support

Show your support by contributing to the study of foreign languages and cultures and foreign language and cultures students at Washington State University.

Foreign Languages & Cultures Development Fund
This fund provides much-needed support to department and student programs and activities, growth opportunities, outreach events and programs, faculty and student travel, and participation in professional conferences.

Foreign Languages & Cultures Special Fund
This fund supports our undergraduate and graduate students through awards and scholarships.
